Andreas Schwarz

A.S. was born in 1964 in Luebeck. After high school and civil service, he began his studies at the Academy of Music in Luebeck with Bill Zien (now a member of the Haifa Symphony Orchestra).
His preference for the marimba became apparent very rapidly. At first, he performed solo in concert, then with great success in the Wooden Art Duo. During this time, he played many concerts, won the 1990 Music Award of the Possehl Society, and took part in numerous workshops with Keiko Abe, Michael Rosen, Leigh Howard Stevens, David Friedman, Dave Samuels, Bill Molenhof, among others.

Following the birth of his first daughter in 1987, still a student, he began teaching percussion. This step led to the composition of several shorter pieces which were studied and performed by his students. These included “Trommelfeuer“ (drum-fire), editors: Zimmermann Verlag, Frankfurt am Main. In 1994, A.S. composed “Effekthascherei“ for two marimbas. In 1990 and 1992, his two younger daughters were born.

A.S. teaches drums and percussion at two music schools in northern Germany. He performs regularly in the German Marimba Duo playing, among other works, the first and presently only version for two marimbas of Modest Mussorgsky´s “Pictures at an Exhibition“. Information concerning these concerts, as well as solo performances, is, of course, available on the internet.
In addition to these activities, A.S. produces mallets (“AS-Mallets“) for marimba and vibraphone and distributes them through his own mail-order service throughout central Europe. A.S. lives and works in a village near Luebeck.
